General Management of the Aquarium-Museum

University of Liège

As the person in charge of day-to-day management, the Director General is responsible for managing and coordinating all the activities of the "Aquarium-Muséum Universitaire de Liège" ASBL.

Description of duties
The Director is mainly responsible for the following tasks

  • Setting the strategy of the University Aquarium-Museum of Liège, its implementation, coordination and the implementation, coordination and follow-up of the strategy
  • The day-to-day management of personnel and teams, including hiring and dismissals (establishment of job descriptions for employees, revision of work regulations in accordance with the job descriptions, the implementation of the staff evaluation system, needs assessment and staff training, ...)
  • Financial management (developing and managing the annual operating budget, finding sources of funding for the sources of financing for the functioning of the ASBL; establishing the calls for offers, the contracts and agreements necessary for the smooth running of the establishment...)
  • The development of the Aquarium-Muséum Universitaire de Liège, its partnerships, its exhibitions, its events, its projects: implementation, coordination, and follow-up with the project managers.
  • Coordination of the Public Service Manager and the Collections Manager
  • Representation and collaboration with the institutional partners of the University Aquarium-Museum of Liège and the networks in which it is involved: ULiège, Pôle Embarcadère du Savoir, MSW, Attraction et Tourisme, ICOM, Universeum, EUAC, UCA, EAZA, ...
  • The coordination of collaborations with the scientific research services of the University of Liège
  • The presentation of activity reports several times a year to the Board of Directors and to the General Assembly of the ASBL
  • The management of the premises allocated to the Institution, in compliance with the rules defined with the ULiège (ARI and SUPHT) and good practices (application of the legislation and regulations hygiene, health and safety at work, protection of the environment and safety against environmental protection and fire safety, etc.)
  • Managing the smooth running of the renovation work on the Museum, its reserves and collections as part of the Museum's renovation project "ST'ART-Muséum 2022 "

  • The management of the obligations of a tourist attraction recognized by the Public Service of Wallonia

  • The management of the missions of an acknowledged museum (category A) by the FWB as defined by
    by ICOM (to acquire, conserve, study, disseminate)

  • The respect of the legislations and the missions related to the activities of a museum of natural sciences
    natural science museum, a zoo and a tourist attraction. See appendix*.

  • Compliance with the legislation of the Code of Societies and Associations CSA, which came into force
    January 1, 2020

He:she is assisted by two managers, deputies to the Directorate:

  • Manager of public and educational services: he:she assists the General Management in the management of educational activities and services to the public of the Aquarium-Muséum University of Liège
  • Responsible for the collections 'Curator' : he:she assists the General Management in the management and coordination of the scientific activities of the University Aquarium-Museum of Liège

Skills, competencies and qualifications

  • Master's degree in management science, entrepreneurship or similar
  • 5 years of experience in a similar field is an asset
  • Relational skills: ability to prevent and manage conflicts, team spirit and ability to lead a multidisciplinary team of more than 20 people, excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of or interest in the Aquarium-Museum's scientific fields (aquatic animals (fish and others), naturalized specimens, preserved specimens, sub-fluid specimens, ...) is an asset
  • Skills in commercial techniques
  • Communication skills (Teams, Outlook, shared diary management, ...)
  • Computer skills, including a working knowledge of office software (Office suite)
  • Budget management and accounting skills
  • Skills in social legislation and salary management
  • Language skills: French, minimum (B1) in English, knowledge of Dutch is a plus

  • Ability to create and develop a professional network, especially with the museum world and zoological parks

Procedure

  • Contract: full-time, permanent contract; basic gross monthly salary (status A4): 4954,28€ (years of seniority could be recognized).
  • Application: Applications (C.V. and cover letter) should be sent via the application form available in the 'Job Offers' section of the website www.aquarium-museum.be before Monday 31 January 2022. A first selection will be made on the basis of the CVs. A written exam will be organized: it will focus on computer subjects (office software), on budget management as well as on the analysis of a text, the capacity of synthesis, and writing related to the legislation of museums and zoological parks. An oral interview will follow the written exam.
