PhD Studentship „Museum Collections, Academic Teaching, and the Making of Geology in the Nineteenth-Century University“

University of Leeds, in collaboration with Oxford University Museum of Natural History (OUMNH) and the Ashmolean Museum

Full-time studentship, fully funded for 3 years, with the option of up to 6 months additional funding for related professional development, beginning on 1 October 2018. Based at the University of Leeds, in collaboration with Oxford University Museum of Natural History (OUMNH) and the Ashmolean Museum.

How did object-led teaching develop in the nineteenth-century university?  What can this teach us about the use of museum collections as a teaching resource?  How did specimens, models and large-scale lecture diagrams contribute to the development of the science of geologyʔ For anyone with an interest in the history of science education – whether trained in science education, history, or museum studies – this PhD project presents an exciting opportunity to explore the historic collections of teaching objects and images in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History and other nationally important collections. Working with staff at Oxford University Museums, the student will also have the opportunity to put the research findings to practical use by contributing to their public engagement programmes.

Supervisory Team:
Dr Jonathan Topham (University of Leeds)
Ms Eliza Howlett and Ms Kathleen Diston (Oxford University Museum of Natural History)
Dr Jim Harris (Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology)
